TLDR
- Goodie’s data shows social content earns about 2.5x the AI citations of owned brand pages, based on 45.2M citations tracked from October 2025 to February 2026.
- AI retrieval favors sources that read as human consensus, and a Reddit thread carries that signal by default.
- Reddit is a leading source in AI answers, and its share swings by model and by week. In Goodie’s data, ChatGPT’s Reddit share fell from 8.0% to 2.9% of its total citations within August 2026.
- Quora shows up mainly in Google’s AI answers and little elsewhere.
- Brands cannot optimize a thread. Answering real questions over several months is the realistic path.
Do AI Models Cite Social Content More Than Owned Pages?
Yes, by about 2.5 times. Goodie’s V2 social citation study tracked 45.2M citations from October 2025 to February 2026, and 1.8M of them were social. Social platforms accounted for about 4.2% of all citations, and owned content accounted for about 1.7%. YouTube long videos, Reddit posts, and X posts drive 76.2% of the social total. Earned media (news, review sites, directories) still supplies about 72% of all citations, so the comparison that matters here is social against what a brand publishes itself.
An earlier Goodie study of 6.1M citations across 10 AI platforms, from August to mid-December 2025, found a peak gap of 4.17x in November 2025 and 2.31x across the full period. Goodie’s most recent read points the same way. The AI’s Social Diet study tracked 1.86M social citations from January to August 2026 and found social’s share of all citations rising from 4.9% to 7.2%, nearly three times the share of owned content (2.5% to 2.8%).
Why AI Models Trust a Reddit Thread Over a Brand Page
AI answer engines like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google’s AI Mode use retrieval-augmented generation. When a question calls for current information, the model runs one or more web searches, reads passages from the pages that come back, and writes an answer built on those passages, usually with links to the sources it used. The sources that survive that step share signals that resemble human consensus: several independent voices, specific detail, and visible engagement. A Reddit thread produces those signals by default. A brand page has a single author with a stake in the outcome.

Independent Voices Carry Weight That Brand Copy Cannot Earn
A thread gathers Redditors who disagree, correct each other, and add details from their own experience. Upvotes show which answers the crowd accepted. Goodie’s first social citation study calls social the fastest-growing evidence layer in AI answers, a shift in what models treat as valid evidence.
A brand page makes claims about the brand, and nothing on the page gives the model an independent way to check them. So it looks elsewhere.
Threaded Q&A Matches How People Prompt
A thread opens with a question and fills with answers. People prompt AI tools with questions in the same shape, so the thread already lines up with the prompt. Brand pages open with a positioning statement and need keywords and context to connect with the question.
Format matters as much as shape. Goodie’s V2 study calls this the extractability principle: the content that wins citations gives models structured, text-rich material on a stable URL. Reddit posts alone accounted for 28.4% of all social citations in that study, and ChatGPT, whose retrieval leans text-first, drew 61.1% of its social citations from Reddit.
Continuous Posting Gives Threads a Freshness Edge
Goodie frames the split this way: social supplies recency, sentiment, and social proof, while owned pages supply canonical facts. Replies keep landing on a live thread. A brand page changes when someone on the team edits it. Retrieval systems that favor recent material find more to work with on the thread.
Licensing Deals Gave Some Models Direct Access to Reddit
Content licensing deals decide which platforms reach which AI models, and Reddit holds deals with two of the biggest. Reuters reported that Reddit’s agreement with Alphabet is worth about $60 million a year and lets Google use Reddit content to train its AI models. In May 2024, Reddit and OpenAI announced a partnership that gives OpenAI access to Reddit’s Data API, which the companies describe as real-time and structured, to bring Reddit content into ChatGPT.
We call this effect platform coupling. After analyzing 6.1M citations across 10 AI surfaces, Goodie found that content licenses and partnerships shape which platforms influence AI visibility, and on which models. In that study, 99.75% of X citations came from Grok and 82.47% of YouTube citations came from Google’s AI surfaces, while Reddit and LinkedIn were cited by all 10 models. Each model sources community content in its own way, and AI data access keeps fragmenting across platforms, so a community plan works best when it names the models it targets. Goodie’s social media as a search engine post goes deeper on social platforms as search surfaces.
A deal sets access, and the model still decides how often to cite what it can reach. ChatGPT shows the gap: OpenAI’s Reddit deal dates to 2024, and ChatGPT’s Reddit citations still dropped sharply in August 2026.

Reddit’s Share of AI Citations Swings by Model and by Month
Reddit is a leading source in AI answers, and its share can fall within days. Two events from the past year show how fast.
The first followed a lawsuit. Reddit sued Perplexity on October 22, 2025, alleging it scraped Reddit data. In Goodie’s data, before that date Reddit made up 19.51% of Perplexity’s social citations. On and after that date it made up 2.67%. YouTube filled the gap, rising from 51.98% to 95.25% of Perplexity’s social citations. Goodie’s first social study treats this as proof that citation visibility is fragile.
The second hit ChatGPT this August. The AI’s Social Diet study found Reddit made up 8.0% of ChatGPT’s total citations from August 1 to 13, 2026, and 2.9% from August 14 to 25. Promptwatch tracked the same cliff independently, from 3.83% to 0.52% of ChatGPT Search citations, as Search Engine Journal reported. Promptwatch labeled its figures provisional.
Those two events sit inside a wider pattern. The same study logged 16 changes in which social platforms AI models cite over seven months, five of which reversed an earlier change, and none of which were announced. One model barely uses Reddit at all: Claude cited it at effectively zero across the study window.
A brand that builds its plan around Reddit is building around a source that sits at the mercy of each model’s sourcing choices. Goodie’s recommendation is to treat Reddit as prime but repriceable: keep showing up there, track which models cite it, and keep any single platform under roughly 40% of your social investment.
Quora Shows Up in Google’s AI Answers and Little Elsewhere

Quora’s citation presence concentrates in Google’s AI products, and the numbers shift with how a study counts. In 2025, Semrush analyzed 26,000 Quora URLs cited in Google AI Mode. It found a Quora link in 7.25% of Google AI Mode responses, which made Quora the 4th most cited source there. The same analysis found that AI Mode rewrites Quora answers, with under 50% overlap between an AI Mode response and the closest Quora reply. Semrush produced the study with Quora’s team.
Brands that care about visibility in Google’s AI answers have a reason to watch Quora. Brands focused on ChatGPT have little reason to.
What Brands Can Do About Threads They Do Not Control
Brands cannot optimize a Reddit or Quora thread the way they optimize a page. The realistic path is authentic participation over a long stretch of time. Ads don’t earn thread citations, and astroturfing gets called out on these platforms. A market for aged accounts and ghostwritten threads is already drawing comparisons to link farms.
Practices that hold up:
- Answer real questions in your category with detail from direct experience.
- Show up in the same communities for months, since presence builds credibility with readers and moderators.
- Disclose your affiliation where the platform expects it.
- Follow each community’s rules on self promotion.

Your own site still has a job. Original research, specific numbers, and direct answers give a retrieval system something concrete to cite. Goodie’s AI search strategy guide covers how community work sits next to SEO, PR, and owned content, and the AI SEO guide covers optimizing owned pages for LLMs.
Participation goes further when you know which platforms and threads AI models cite in your category, because that tells you where an answer is worth posting.
See Which Threads and Platforms AI Cites in Your Category
Goodie’s Social Optimization Suite tracks your brand’s visibility across the major social platforms and shows which posts, formats, and creators generate AI citations in your category. That tells your team which Reddit threads and which models deserve your time. Pair it with Goodie’s AI Visibility Monitoring, which tracks citation mix at the platform-model level, so a swing like ChatGPT’s August Reddit drop reads as a sourcing change instead of a content problem.
Reddit & Quora FAQs
Retrieval systems look for signs of human consensus, and a thread supplies several independent voices, specific detail, and visible engagement. A brand page has one author with a stake in the outcome. Goodie’s V2 study shows social content earning about 2.5x the citations of owned pages from October 2025 to February 2026.
Reddit’s influence is large and variable. Reddit posts alone accounted for 28.4% of social citations in Goodie’s V2 study. The share moves by model: Reddit fell from 19.51% to 2.67% of Perplexity’s social citations on October 22, 2025, ChatGPT’s Reddit share fell from 8.0% to 2.9% of its total citations in August 2026, and Claude cites Reddit at effectively zero.
Quora matters less, and in narrower places. Semrush found a Quora link in 7.25% of Google AI Mode responses, which ranked Quora 4th among sources there. Reddit appears across more models, though its share swings.
A brand can participate. Answer real questions with specific detail, stay active in the same communities for months, disclose your affiliation, and follow each community’s rules. Owned content with original data gives retrieval systems something to cite alongside those threads, and tracking which threads AI models cite in your category shows where an answer is worth posting.
